Retention Phase

Sustainably Secured

Retention appliances are used for the last finetuning as well as to stabilize the treatment results after the completion of active orthodontic therapy with removable or fixed braces. In the retention phase, the wearing time of retainers is increasingly reduced.

Everything from a single source – our own practice lab

We have been running our own dental laboratory, certified according to ISO standards, since 1 May 1989. There’s a close cooperation between your orthodontist Dr. Michael de Cassan and the dental technician working hand in hand. Due to the use of state-of-the-art technology, high craftsmanship and high-quality materials, our orthodontic appliances are individually manufactured for each patient.

Short distances and direct communication between orthodontist and technician allow for optimal and rapid treatment.

Retention Phase (Passive Treatment)
At the end of active orthodontic treatment, the patient receives retention appliances to stabilize the result. These orthodontic apparatuses can also be used for finetuning and must be worn at night and in some cases even during the day.

An overview of the usual retainers:

The Retention Plate
This apparatus looks like a normal removable brace.
We offer many colors to choose from.

The Retainer
After having completed the orthodontic therapy successfully, the use of a lingual retainer might make sense to stabilize the outcome of the treatment. In this context you have to consider that on the one hand, there’s a persistent tendency of teeth to migrate forward,on the other hand, one has to calculate the pressure of wisdom teeth, especially until the patient’s age of 25. For this reason, the incisors might change position on the long run.

Therefore, we attach a very thin gold wire to the incisors and canines which keeps the teeth in the desired position. This retainer should be worn for many years to counteract growth-related tooth movements after having completed orthodontic therapy. From the outside, the retainer is not visible and you will get used to it in no time.
Wearing the retainer does not increase the risk of tooth decay or the deposit of tartar on the teeth if you stick to a good and regular dental care.
